The Honorable Melvin K. Westmoreland has served as a trial court judge in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit since 1988. He is currently a judge in the Superior Court of Fulton County having previously been on the Fulton County State Court bench. In 2010, Judge Westmoreland became the first elected Fulton County Business Court judge. In that assignment Judge Westmoreland presides over high-value, complex business litigation in addition to hearing a general civil docket. Judge Westmoreland practiced law with the Atlanta firm of King & Spalding when he was initially appointed by Gov. Joe Frank Harris. He previously worked as Director of the Pro Bono Project of the State Bar of Georgia and as Deputy Director of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. Mel has served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association, the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and the Atlanta Council of Young Lawyers. He is currently service as Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Council of Superior Court Judges. Born in Ft. Bragg, N.C., he graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and received his Juris Doctor from Western New England College School of Law. Judge Westmoreland is a member of the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church where he has served on the Administrative Board and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, the former Sally Stephens, have three children and are involved in numerous community activities.
