Judge Alford J. Dempsey, Jr.
Biographical Sketch

 Judge Alford J. Dempsey, Jr. serves as a judge in the Superior Court of Fulton County where he currently presides over civil and felony criminal cases. In keeping with his lifelong commitment to public service, Judge Dempsey was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Fulton County Family Court, delivering therapeutic justice while maintaining the integrity of the law.  Currently, he continues to provide leadership in the Court’s effort to improve efficiency by having volunteered to Chair the Court's Non-Complex Felony Division.  The goal of the Non-Complex Felony Division is to dispose of non-complex felony cases, which comprise 65 to 70 percent of the Court's felony cases, in nine weeks or less.

Judge Dempsey is an Atlanta native, an honor graduate of Morehouse College, and a graduate of the Harvard Law School.  Prior to being appointed to the Superior Court in 1995 by then governor Zell Miller, Judge Dempsey was active in private practice, served with distinction for over 15 years as an Atlanta Assistant City Attorney, and served for three years as a Judge on the Magistrate Court of Fulton County.

In 1996, Judge Dempsey faced opposition when running to retain his seat, and received an overwhelming 76% of the votes cast.  This represented the largest margin of victory in any contested judicial race in Georgia.  Judge Dempsey has since been re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2008. 

Judge Dempsey is a member of a number of professional legal organizations, including the State Bar of Georgia, the Council of Superior Court Judges, the American Judges Association, the American Judicature Society, the Atlanta Bar Association (Past Chair Judicial Section), the Bleckley Inn of Court, the Gate City Bar Association (Immediate Past Chair Judicial Section), the Georgia Hispanic Bar Association, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the National Bar Association,  and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta.

Judge Dempsey is actively involved in numerous community organizations.  Among other things, he currently serves as the District Chair of the South Atlanta District of the Boy Scouts of America, a Board Member and Past-President of the Board of Carrie Steele-Pitts Home, a Board Member of Sisters By Choice, Inc. and a Board Member of Aniz, Inc.  He is also a member of Leadership Atlanta, the NAACP, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, and the Board of Trustees of First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Judge Dempsey was married to the late Colleen B. Dempsey for thirty-two years.  Judge Dempsey has three children and three grandchildren.
