The Honorable Melvin K. Westmoreland served as a trial judge in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit beginning in 1988 and was recently appointed by Governor Nathan Deal as a senior judge in the Superior Courts of Georgia.

Judge Westmoreland practiced law with the Atlanta firm of King & Spalding when he was initially appointed to the bench by Governor Joe Frank Harris.  He previously worked as Director of the Pro Bono Project of the State Bar of Georgia and as Deputy Director of the Atlanta legal Aid Society.  He has served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association, the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, the Atlanta Council of Younger Lawyers and the statewide Council of Superior Court Judges.

In 2009, Judge Westmoreland became the first elected Fulton County Business Court judge and he continues to serve on that Court as a senior judge presiding over high-value complex business litigation.  As a senior judge he also conducts judicially hosted settlement conferences and presides over trials throughout the State of Georgia.

Born in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Judge Westmoreland graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and received his Juris Doctor from the Western New England College School of Law.  Judge Westmoreland has been a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church for over twenty-five years where he has served on the Administrative Board and as a member of the Board of Trustees.  He and his wife, the former Sally Stephens, have three children and are involved in numerous community activities.
