Received a jury summons?
What does this mean? This means that you have been randomly selected, by computer, as a prospective grand or trial juror in the Superior Court of Fulton County. The summons also makes you eligible for service in Fulton County State Court, Probate Court, or City of Atlanta Traffic Court. Read the summons carefully for reporting information.
I’ve been summoned as a trial juror, and there’s an “X” in the standby box. Do I have to report? You may or may not have to report. Fulton County uses the standby summonsing method to avoid having jurors report when it becomes apparent that they won’t be needed. It is very important that you follow the instructions printed on the summons and call the day before the service date to hear the reporting schedule of your group. You will not receive the expense allowance fee if you report when your group has been excused in the standby announcement.
Where do I report? The Jury Assembly Room is located on the 7th floor of the Justice Center Tower, 185 Central Avenue, between Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. and Mitchell Street.
How long does jury service last? For Trial Jurors: Service is for one trial or one day. If you are selected to be on a jury, you will serve until the trial is finished. If you are not assigned to a courtroom at the end of the day, your service is complete and you do not have to return. For Grand Jurors: On the first day, report to the location shown on your summons at the stated time. At this time the court will organize and charge the grand jury. Second and subsequent days: You will have to come every Tuesday and Friday during the court term (two months) and possibly on other days as needed.
What if I can’t come that day? I already have plans and can’t change them. You may ask that your jury service be postponed or rescheduled. This means that you arrange to serve on another day. Requests for postponement must be submitted in writing and received in the Jury Clerk’s Office ten days prior to the service date. In a personal emergency give as much notice as possible. You will be notified of the court’s decision by mail. You may also call the Jury Clerk’s Office for that information.
What if I can’t come at all? Georgia law only provides two categories for complete exemption from jury duty. They are age and permanent mental/physical disability. An affidavit for each category is included with the jury summons.
In addition, an excuse may be granted to any person who is a full time student at a college, university, vocational school, or other post secondary school; and, any person who is the primary caregiver having active care and custody of a child under four years of age. If you meet the above criteria select the appropriate affidavit from the Documents and Forms section of this website. The affidavit must be completed, notarized, and returned to the Jury Clerk's Office.
How often can I be called to jury service: Fulton County residents may be summoned to jury service once every eighteen (18) months.
What if I don't live in Fulton County? To be excused from service for not being a Fulton County resident you must return the jury summons along with proof of residency i.e. a copy of a utility bill in your name or your driver's license with your current address. If you have further questions, please call our jury office at 404-612-4601 or 404-612-4605.
Do I get paid for jury service? Yes. Fulton County gives you a $25 per day expense allowance to cover whatever expenses you may incur, such as parking and lunch.
Speaking of lunch, is there any place to eat down there? Yes. There are two cafeterias, a small one in the Justice Center Tower and a larger one in the Fulton County Government Center. Underground Atlanta's food court is just down the street. Various other restaurants, fast food and sit down, are located within walking distance. Menus and maps are available in the jury assembly room.
How do I get there? Where do I park? Do I have to pay for parking? If you would like to park close to the courthouse, but not at Underground Atlanta, there are numerous other pay lots close by. For driving directions to the Fulton County Justice Center Tower, click here.
Free Parking is available at the Turner Field Orange Lot at the corner of Hank Aaron Blvd. and Fulton Street. A shuttle bus will take you from the parking lot to the Justice Center Tower.
